Movement Unscripted: The Art of Improvisation

Supported by Rhoades Performance & Choreography Grant

My work researches movement improvisation as a form of healing, care, and community in the rehearsal process. Done through a series of prompts in movement improvisation and reflection, inspiration was drawn from varied art forms, such as spoken word, music, and visual art. A performance in March 2024 was a culmination of improvisational scores based on discussions and experiences that the dancers and I had in the rehearsal process. I have discovered the growth and healing that the practice of improvisation can hold and the powerful effects that dance improvisation can have on mental health and well-being.

Improvisation Workshops

I teach classes rooted in dance improvisation, with a focus on promoting healing, community, and care. These workshops can be adapted for the following groups: dance studios, children and adults with disabilities, recreation centers, and more.

“I enjoyed watching the Core Members engage with Jessica like she was a friend. Not only was Jessica's program inclusive, respectfully inviting everyone to participate, but Jessica was also inclusive of the many ideas that were tossed in her direction.”
